Progress and Setbacks

Remodeling lesson #5,231:  Never, ever let the following words escape your lips... "The project should be done by the end of the week."

Those words are the kiss of death!  Well, perhaps that's a bit extreme, but those words could definitely turn around and bite you, as they did me.  You see, Tuesday I was doing a happy dance and singing the Pointer Sisters' "I'm So Excited" in my head.  Everything was rolling right along in the master bathroom.

The shower was grouted...

The carrara marble sills were installed...

The crown moulding went up...

My little guy was living every 2 year old boy's dream, peeking into the room and watching power tools in action...

The countertop and sinks were installed ...

The cabinetry was being completed...

EEEEEEKKKKKK.... (that's the sound of screeching brakes)... let's revisit the cabinetry, shall we?

Do you see a problem?  I didn't notice it right away, but the faucets are not centered between the two columns.  In fact, there is a good 4" difference on either side.  Ugh!

Long story short, our cabinetmaker had made some changes to the dimensions of the bottom cabinets, but had not made the appropriate adjustments to the upper cabinet.  Sadly, the result is that my spacious 24" upper cabinet now must be replaced by an 18" cabinet.  I'm not thrilled, but I'm learning that when it comes to remodeling, some things that you hope will be perfect may just have to be good enough. Hmmm... that's becoming a bit of a mantra around here.

It's amazing how one small mistake sets back an entire project.  We have to wait for the new cabinet before the trimwork can be finished, before the painting can be completed, before the tub and plumbing fixtures can be installed, before the electrician can hook up all the light fixtures, before I can soak in the tub with a glass of champagne.

I thought I would be revealing the completed bathroom today, but now it looks as if it should be done at the end of next week  it will have to wait.

  2. Hi Carolyn, I found your blog through Sara's link. It must have been unbelievable running into her.I'm also new to blogging, I'm having a blast it's so much fun and I'm learning tons. Your bathroom looks like its going to be beautiful. Why is there always a glitch in projects? I will continue to follow your journey. I'd love it if you would visit and if you feel so inclined to follow me too.

  5. It is looking absolutely fabulous. Small things like that you notice at first, especailly when things are under constructions, but you won't worry once all your nice things are in there.

That marble has me swooning...my absolute favourite.

  6. Looking foward to seeing the finished bathroom. It's going to be beautiful! Love the cabinet between the sinks. I totally understand your comment "I'm learning that when it comes to remodeling, some things that you hope will be perfect may just have to be good enough." We turned a 4th bedroom into a master bath suite, which included jackhammering the floor to run water. What a huge mess it was, but all worth it. I bet you'll feel the same way the first time you can soak in the tub with a glass of champagne.

  7. Hi, Carolyn! Visiting via Thrifty Decor Chick. I love your new bath! We have the same taste! Looks a lot like ours that's going in our reno! I feel your pain about the cabinets. We've had to change ours as well so the sconces would fit. Come visit me when you get the chance!
