Breaking Design Rules

You know the design rule that says you should never place a bed in front of a window? Yeah, well... I broke it.

You know what else? I'm so glad I did.

I'm working on my son's room, which is awkwardly shaped. I tried to avoid putting his full-size bed in front of the window. But, it just wasn't working for me on the only other wall where it would actually fit. The traffic pattern was weird and disjointed.

So, I moved things around, and this is what we have now...

I'm sure Feng Shui experts everywhere are cringing, but this bed is staying put. Not just because I have tennis elbow and can't bear to move it again, but because I really like it here.

It's ironic that the child who will sleep in this room is my biggest rule follower. Thankfully, he is unaware of design rules or he would probably refuse to sleep in here :)

Obviously, I still have a looooong way to go til this room is ready, but I did score a couple of new pieces for it. A local design studio was having a warehouse sale on Friday, and I brought home those two prints on the wall. I know they look a bit strange the way they're hung. I literally stuck them on nails that were still in the wall from when this room was a nursery. I also still have the tags on them. Don't judge. I'll hang them properly one of these days. At least they're not on the floor.

I also picked up a navy houndstooth rug.

Nothing like blurry photos of a houndstooth rug... whoa! Are you dizzy?

I spent part of the day painting furniture for this room. And, I picked up a pretty cool craigslist desk this weekend. Stay tuned...

Have you broken any rules lately?

  3. I love it there! I've thought about doing the same thing several times but I haven't found the perfect headboard to protect the wall/window/blinds/etc. Of course I've seen where the bed was turned the other way so it was footboard to the window. but you would need a tad bit more room to make that work in your favor!

  4. It totally works. I did it too in the guest room. The headboard, like yours, is wrough iron; in other words, not bulky or blocks light. I like it :)

  5. I don't think it looks wrong to put a bed in front of a window when the room dictates that type of furniture arrangement. I've seen it done before in magazines anyway, so it can't be TOO wrong can it? Ha! Looking forward to seeing everything else come together.

  7. Looks great! I've seen many designers put beds in front of windows so I don't think it's that much of a faux pas :)

  8. I didn't know there was a rule! Maybe there should be a rule not to put windows in the middle of a wall. This looks great, Carolyn, and I love the rug!

  9. Love the bed in front of the window...I had the same problem in my bedroom...when you entered the room, all you saw was the side of the bed...So I placed it in the sitting area of a bay window....Plantation shutters cover the window and I placed an oil painting over the shutters ... Who made up the rules anyway?...i say make up your own rules...the ones that work for you!!

  13. I recently did a post on twin bedrooms and my favourites were where the beds were placed in front of the windows. I think this room is looking great already! Love the bed! x Sharon

  14. I love a bed in front of a window, and am considering trying that layout when I redo my master. But, your son's room just inspired me to think about it in my son's room! His room is tiny and moving the bed in front of the window might just help out. LOVE that houndstooth rug!
