The Basement Makeover Begins (with a slight glitch)

After a very long winter break, my kids were finally able to go back to school this morning. As much as I love being home with my family, there was a little too much time spent cooped up inside. I was ready to get out and about this week.

Unfortunately, life had other plans for me. For some unknown reason, I now have shingles. It hasn't gotten too awful yet, but I've read horror stories online. I got on antiviral meds quickly, so I'm hopeful that my case will be mild.

2014 hasn't been off to the best start, but my snow captivity did allow me to get started on a project that's been swirling around in my head for a while.

Check out this beast of a media cabinet in our basement that the previous owners built to accommodate
a large TV...

The TV bit the dust, and I would have liked to get rid of the built-ins and hang the new TV on the wall. However, the carpet is laid around the built-ins, and I don't want the expense of re-carpeting the entire basement.

So instead, I decided to update the cabinet with paint. This is my inspiration picture...

I decided to use chalk paint since I had it on hand and it doesn't require priming. I've got a long way to go, but this is how it's looking...

I used "Old White" for the back of the shelves, and "French Linen" for the outside.

It's a long process as several of the pieces are plywood and suck the paint up. I've done 3 coats so far.

I'm planning on replacing the ugly black mesh fabric with burlap or an ivory linen and updating the hardware. I don't know how long it will take to get finished, especially now that the darn shingles have gotten me, but I'm hoping by the end of the month.

Wish me luck…

Hope 2014 is treating you better than me :)

  1. Looking awesome already! You really picked a great inspiration photo. The display and storage potential from a piece like that must be great. It's going to look like a brand new custom piece at a fraction of the price.

  4. That is going to look great once it is done, Carolyn. I am so sorry you have the shingles. As soon as I turned 50 I went and got the shot because I have seen people in the hospital with them. NOT a nice thing to get. Hope they subside quickly. Get lots of rest because they really do take a toll on your whole system.
Take your time on that piece- you have the whole winter to get'er done! xo Diana

  6. LOVE your inspiration and what you've painted so far. Can't wait to see it finished. And, take care! I had shingles in my eye a couple of years ago and it was, by far, the worst experience of my life!

  8. I love it! I just painted my dining room table and chairs Old White this past weekend - it started out as a black set - took 3 coats as well and instead of sealing it with wax to make it last longer, I sealed it with the Annie Sloan floor laquer...it has a matte finish so it's perfect - just FYI if you decide to seal it with floor laquer, you can't use wax - just the paint and the laquer. Can't wait to see your end results! Hope you are feeling better soon.

  9. Amazing, simply amazing. So many folks have been getting rid of these...good job!

Sorry you have the shingles. My brother just got rid of them...his was horrible. He kept getting the wrong diagnosis, because they were in at least 5 different places...which they don't normally do. I think it was because they let him go without proper treatment.

  11. French Linen and Old White could be my favorite color combination ever. It is going to be lovely. I can see why you loved that inspiration picture! Good luck with the shingles. They suck. I got them on my face several Februaries ago. Started my meds very early, but still had a bit to go through. Take care.
